In-Home Physiotherapy FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about in-home physiotherapy in one place. If your question isn't answered here, call us at416-795-0373— we're happy to help.

Getting Started

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No.In Ontario, you can see a physiotherapist without a doctor's referral. Physiotherapists are primary care practitioners — you can self-refer. The only exceptions are some insurance plans (especially auto insurance and WSIB) that may require a referral for coverage. Check with your insurer if you're unsure.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Typically2-5 business daysfrom your first call. For urgent situations (fresh post-surgical patients coming home from hospital), we can often arrange same-week appointments.

What areas do you serve?

We serveToronto, Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, and Oakville. See our location pages for neighbourhood-specific information.

How do I book?

Call416-795-0373or use the booking form on our website. We'll ask about your condition, location, and scheduling preferences to match you with the right physiotherapist.

During Your Visit

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your physiotherapist to see and access the area being treated. Shorts and a t-shirt are ideal. You don't need to change into anything special — wear what's comfortable.

What equipment does the physio bring?

Everything needed for your session: a portable treatment mat, resistance bands, balance tools, assessment instruments, and any specialized equipment for your condition. You don't need to buy or prepare anything.

How long is each session?

  • Initial assessment:60-75 minutes
  • Follow-up sessions:45-60 minutes

The full session is one-on-one with your registered physiotherapist. No assistants, no shared time.

Can a family member be present?

Yes, and we encourage it— especially if a family member helps with daily care. Your physiotherapist can teach them safe transfer techniques, exercise spotting, and how to support recovery between visits.

Do I need to clear space?

Just enough room to lie on a mat and stand with arms extended — your living room or bedroom usually works. Your physiotherapist will help adjust the space when they arrive. Don't worry about your house being perfectly tidy — we've seen it all and we're there for your physio, not your housekeeping.

Insurance and Cost

How much does it cost?

  • Initial assessment:Starting at $130
  • Follow-up sessions:Starting at $90

Is it covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases.Extended health insurance plans cover in-home physiotherapy at the same rate as clinic-based physio. The key requirement is that treatment is provided by a registered physiotherapist — which all of our therapists are.

Is it covered by OHIP?

No.OHIP-funded physiotherapy is only available at specific designated clinics and hospital outpatient departments. Private in-home physiotherapy is not OHIP-funded. For details on who qualifies for OHIP physio, seeIs Private Physiotherapy Worth It? What OHIP Doesn't Cover.

Do you offer direct billing?

We provide detailed receipts for insurance submission. Direct billing availability depends on your insurance provider — ask us when you book and we'll let you know.

Can I claim it on my taxes?

Yes.All physiotherapy expenses are eligible medical expenses on your Canadian tax return. Keep your receipts.

What conditions do you treat?

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation (knee replacement, hip replacement, shoulder, back)
  • Falls prevention and balance training
  • Chronic pain (back, neck, joint pain, arthritis)
  • Stroke and neurological rehabilitation
  • Senior mobility and conditioning
  • Post-fracture rehabilitation
  • General musculoskeletal conditions

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition:

  • Simple musculoskeletal issue:4-8 sessions over 6-8 weeks
  • Post-surgical rehab:12-24 sessions over 8-16 weeks
  • Falls prevention:8-12 sessions to establish a program, then periodic check-ins
  • Chronic or neurological conditions:Ongoing, frequency adjusted to your needs

Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic estimate at your first visit.

How often will I need sessions?

  • Acute recovery (weeks 1-4):2-3 times per week
  • Building phase (weeks 5-8):1-2 times per week
  • Maintenance:Every 2-4 weeks, then as needed

What if I need to cancel?

We ask for24 hours' noticefor cancellations. We understand that life happens — if an emergency comes up, just let us know.

Quality and Credentials

Are your physiotherapists registered?

Yes.All Haven at Home physiotherapists are registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. They hold a Master's or equivalent degree in physiotherapy and maintain ongoing professional development.

Will I see the same physio each time?

Yes, wherever possible.Continuity of care is important — your physiotherapist knows your history, your goals, and your home. We assign you a primary therapist and maintain that relationship throughout your treatment.

How is in-home physio different from clinic physio?

The treatment itself is the same — same qualifications, same techniques, same evidence-based approach. The differences are practical: in-home physio happens in your environment (which is an advantage for many conditions), sessions are fully one-on-one, and you don't need to travel.
